Toilet block in the dunes
December 1998
Changing the subject slightly, veteran naturist campaigner Marion
Ward writes from Bournemouth, with a gentle rebuke:
Dear SUN,
I write to say that I don't agree with the criticism of Trevor
Pratten by Barry and Marianne Grant (TBE6, June '98). I agree
with Trevor's "appalling suggestion" (according to the Grants) that
the National Trust should be asked to build toilets in the dunes, or somewhere nearby. I
have previously wondered why they have not done so already, for all kinds of
visitors, now that it is becoming so crowded at Studland. It should even be
possible to have some sort of natural earth closet type. (Older
members who are ex-servicemen or ex-Scouts may recall the old thunder-boxes -
Deep Trench Latrines or DTLs; anyone like to comment or reminisce about these? -
Ed.) A drinking water tap would be nice as well. Trevor Pratten
was the first to "wake up" to the need for toilets - and I am sure he
knows there is no need for any shops!

Well, that's opened up that discussion a bit. Anyone else like
to add their thoughts? SUN Group is, as a matter of policy, opposed to any
further development at Studland, but as we have said before we are a democratic
organisation and this newsletter is intended in part as a forum for members'
views.
Our latest information from the National Trust on this specific question
was aired at the first meeting we had back in 1985, when Dorset Area Manager Mark
Harold told us that there were no plans to build any further toilet
facilities on the Studland peninsula. Of course, this was three months before
Purbeck District Council voted to grant £20,000 to the National Trust "to build a
toilet block at Shell Bay". Hmmm.
